Hi, I’m Ryan Cook!

I’ve started a veteran’s group called A Skill to Heal because I know that veterans need to have a mission every day with the help and support from friends and family to reach their ultimate goal of finding joy and peace while
facing a host of everyday challenges. As a veteran, I understand the things that can hinder us. Firstly, the cost of finding a hobby and the cost of a start-up when you do finally find a hobby. The second issue is the “gimmick” offers
from those people and businesses that try to target veterans as an easy mark. Well, rest assured this is NOT a gimmick. This is my way of giving back.

I’ve found that growing giant plants for food, fun, or competition creates an appealing brotherhood much like the military. Veterans are challenged by other veterans and other growers to be the best that they can be and
accomplish the end goal of growing great plants. One fantastic thing is that you can grow just about anywhere. You can grow indoors during the winter or in a greenhouse. You can grow in the summer in your backyard or on a
porch, patio, or balcony. Whatever your living situation, we can assure you that growing is possible. We have created a special You Tube channel called Heavenly Hills Homestead where you can learn all the growing techniques to
help you grow giant fruits and vegetables successfully just like I did! There can even be big rewards in it for the
successful grower.

Eldo and Julie bought a house in mid-Tennessee and invited me to visit over the summer of ‘76. It was a sharp right off Hwy 70 outside of Nashville over a small bridge and then miles on a dirt road. It turned out that they had to run a water line up the side of a steep wooded hill so that this old fixer-upper would have water. I told Eldo that I was ready to work for Julie’s fried chicken dinner. He stopped to caution me that we both had to put on a pair of pantyhose before we ventured out on that overgrown hillside. After 3 hours of clambering up and down the hill and laying in the dirt, we finished the task. It’s when we went inside to change that I realized that the pantyhose acted as a barrier against those nasty ticks that dotted the outside of the leggings. That lesson has stayed with me all these years later. Each time I hear about the myriad of tick and mosquito-borne diseases that we have to deal with…Lyme disease, West Nile virus, EEE, I think of Eldo’s great pantyhose trick! Finally, I’ve designed something based on his clever solution that improves protection and helps us take back the woods!

Did you know that the Queen’s gardener is using garlic spray on the roses? We didn’t! A guided tour with Alan Titchmarsh in The Queen’s Garden (ITV) was a rare treat and told the story. This show, the first of a two-part documentary, hid another surprise. We’ve always thought Prince Charles was the eco-warrior in the family, keen to abide by organic methods. But it turns out it’s the Queen who is most committed to pesticide-free gardening. She insists that no man-made chemicals are used to spray the roses for greenfly — instead, the bushes are doused in water steeped in garlic.

The auto industry has recently begun to use a new soy based wiring insulation in the engine wiring of many cars. She has found that by spraying fox urine on and around the wiring under the hood and on the car tires that she has all but eliminated the annoying pests that were literally eating her car. The Power of Peroxide:  White Water Cleaning in the Age of Corona Virus

 WHITE WATER is a powerful, concentrated, stable peroxide cleaner to remove stains, dirt, soils, grease, mold, mildew, organic matter in a very safe, eco friendly chemical process. WHITEWATER is a concentrated product, it needs to be dilutes alteast 1 part to 128 parts for medium cleaning strength and 1 part to 10 parts of water for heavy duty cleaning. It contains NO corrosive ingredients, contains NO carcinogens or harsh chemicals like chlorine bleach.

If you’re old enough, you probably remember getting a skinned knee and having your mother or the school nurse apply hydrogen peroxide to the wound.  It fizzed up and tickled more than burned like iodine and, miraculously, it cleansed the scrape killing germs and bacteria.  Hydrogen peroxide is still seen as an environmentally safe alternative to chlorine-based bleaches, as it degrades to form oxygen and water and it is generally recognized as safe as an antimicrobial agent by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).^[70]  According to the CDC, household (3 percent) hydrogen peroxide is effective in deactivating rhinovirus, the virus that causes the common cold, within 6 to 8 minutes of exposure. Rhinovirus is more difficult to destroy than even coronaviruses, so hydrogen peroxide should be able to break down the coronavirus in less time. Pour it undiluted into a spray bottle and spray it on the surface to be cleaned, but let it sit on the surface for at least 1 minute.  Hydrogen peroxide is not corrosive, so it’s okay to use it on metal surfaces. But similar to bleach, it can discolor fabrics if you accidentally get it on your clothes. It’s great for getting into hard-to-reach crevices. You can pour it on the area, and you don’t have to wipe it off because it essentially decomposes into oxygen and water. 

White Water Hydrogen peroxide may be used for the sterilization of various surfaces,^[64] including surgical tools,^[65] and may be deployed as a vapour (VHP) for room sterilization.^[66] H₂O₂ demonstrates broad-spectrum efficacy against viruses, bacteria, yeasts, and bacterial spores.^[67] In general, greater activity is seen against Gram-positive than Gram-negative bacteria; however, the presence of catalase or other peroxidases in these organisms may increase tolerance in the presence of lower concentrations.^[68] Higher concentrations of H₂O₂ (10 to 30%) and longer contact times are required for sporicidal activity.^[69]
